Year 6 – Textiles Phone Cases

Year 6 have been working with textiles this half term and have designed and made their own mobile phone case. The children looked at lots of different examples of phone cases before designing their own case. They were given the choice of whether they would make their phone/tablet case for themselves or for someone in their family.

First, year 6 sketched out different ideas for their phone case in their D&T books.  Next, they had to decide which idea they would make into their design. From this design they made a paper template so that they could cut their felt to the correct size and shape. They used the paper template to create an accurate phone case size and shape. Next they had to create the design details that would go on the front and back of their case. Would their case have a pocket? How would it fasten? What coloured felt would they need for the details? Which stitches would they use to make their product aesthetically pleasing? These were all questions they had to consider before they could begin the process of making their phone case. The children worked hard to use blanket stitch to create a bold and creative finish around the edge of their case. We talked about how blanket stitch is a strong stitch that holds and brings two pieces of fabric together but can also look very decorative if sewn carefully. The smaller details were added to the phone cases using running stitch. The results are brilliant! Well done year 6!

"Year 6 have worked well on their textile project and were able to design and make a mobile phone case which followed their design ideas from their D&T book. The children enjoyed learning how to make a template and once they were shown this skill they were able to work fairly independently on their sewing project. We talked about blanket stitch being a strong edging but decorative stitch that would make their phone case durable but yet aesthetically pleasing. It was great to see the children added their finishing details to their phone case design. Some children were able to help others when they had finished. Well done year 6!"
