Sculpture using natural materials

Project Overview

Year 2 have been learning about sculpture this half term. They have looked at different sculptures and realised that sculptures can be made from lots of different materials. Some sculptures were made from man-made materials and some sculptures were made from natural materials. They looked closely at the work of sculptor and land artist Andy Goldsworthy who works with natural materials. They saw examples of his work where he had used lots of found, natural materials like sticks, leaves, stones, pebbles, wood, ice, snow, mud, flowers and even the rain! The children went out into the school grounds and collected what natural objects they could find and then brought them back to work with in the outdoor area. In small groups, they placed their natural objects carefully to create a 3d piece of work. The children used gallery time to observe and comment on each other’s sculptures. When the wind was too strong outside the children worked inside making different shapes and forms. Well done year 2!

What skills were developed?

  • learnt that sculpture is 3 dimensional

  • learnt to make sculpture using natural, found materials

  • learnt to use shape, size and colour to help them place and assemble their sculpture

  • can talk about what they like/dislike in a piece of work sensitively

  • use their sketchbook to gather and record their thoughts and ideas

What the Teacher says

The year 2 children have worked brilliantly in small groups to create different sculptures using natural objects outside. They considered shape, size and colour when selecting their items to place and assemble to make their final pieces. The children realised that their work would be ephemeral (wouldn't last) and so they had to work quickly and communicate in their groups. They used the ipad to take pictures of their work. Amazing work year 2! Well done!
