Year 2 – Multiplication and Division

Year 2 have worked hard in maths to gain a deep understanding of multiplication and division.

They have used counters to make groups and have learned how the representation of the groups can be expressed in different ways.  Drawing groups and writing equations has helped them to explore their understanding, and creating arrays has helped them to relate the equations to each other.   When learning specifically about the two times table, they have discussed what the numbers in the equations represent, supported further by the use of number lines.  Stem sentences have helped them to express their understanding too.

What The Student Says

“The three represents the number of groups and the two represents how many are in each group.” “I can see four groups of 2.” “The counters help me to remember the times and the divide.” “I like to draw jumps of two on the number line.”

What knowledge and skills have been developed?

  • developed their use of language to talk about multiplication and division in the context of the two times table.
  • can make connections between grouping and multiplication and division.
  • use commutativity to support them in calculating efficiently and rapidly.
  • can use arrays to help them to understand the structure of the two times table.

What the Teacher says

“The children have enjoyed using counters and creating arrays to explore division and multiplication.  They have loved dancing and singing to help them to learn the two times table and they have shown lots of thought and understanding when reasoning about the concepts.  It is always a pleasure to see them working together to explore and investigate and to hear them listening to and building on each other’s ideas.” Mrs Stirk - Class teacher
