Year 2 food technology

Year 2 Making a Fruit Salad

Project Overview

In food technology, year 2 have learnt how to make a fruit salad. They looked at different types of fruit and we talked about where lots of fruits come from and how they are grown in hot countries. We looked at some fruits that are grown in the UK and fruits that are in season.

Next, the children designed their own fruit salad. They considered fruits they liked and we also talked about fruits they had not yet tried.

We talked about how some fruits have protective skins that need peeling and others don’t they just need a wash.

The children learnt about the importance of good hygiene before preparing food. We used the community kitchen to prepare and make the fruit salad.

The children used bananas, apples, pears, oranges, red and green grapes, strawberries, blueberries and pineapple to create the fruit salad.

It was  a resounding success! Not a morsal left just lots of empty bowls.

What The Student Says

“I loved the fruit salad. It was delicious!”

“It was yummy. I had a second bowl.”

” I tried pineapple for the first time and I liked it!”

“I enjoyed chopping the fruit really small so we could eat it.”

“The fruits looked so healthy and colourful. It made me want to eat it.”

What The Teacher Says

This has been a brilliant project for the year 2 children. It has built on their year 1 food technology skills. The children really enjoyed handling the fruits and preparing them. They enjopyed learning how to use a knife safely and how to make a claw grip with their hand. They loved seeing all the individual fruits come together to make a delicious bowl of fruit salad that everyone tried and ate. Some children had a second helping and there wasn’t any left, just empty bowls!
