Y6 – Residential at Kingswood

Project Overview

This half term, Y6 were lucky enough to go to Kingswood Peak Venture in Sheffield. We stayed there for a whole week and the children enjoyed taking part in a wide range of activities, such as abseiling, rock climbing, zipwire, team games and many more! 

This trip was an amazing opportunity for the children to enjoy spending time with each other in their last year at primary school. They worked on all of our golden threads:

Knowledge – Everyone learnt so much about outdoor adventurous activities that we never knew before! We learnt multiple ways to tie ropes to create a buggy, as well as how to safely put on a harness.

Spark – The children used their initiative through supporting one another and coming up with amazing solutions to problems during team building activities.

Humanity – Kindness was really important on this trip and Y6 were a credit to themselves, their families and Clapgate. They were polite to all the members of staff and showed real care towards each other.

Grit – Many of the children were nervous to take part in some of the higher activities, but they were all so resilient and determined to try their best. They should all be so proud of their efforts!

Team – The children worked together for all the activities, either to create something or support one another. They cheered each other on and, for many of the high ropes activities, they had to man the ropes to keep each other safe.

“I liked all the activities but the best was bouldering as we got to go through a dark tunnel that represented a cave. I don’t like tight spaces so it helped me to get over my fear.” – Y6 Child

 

What skills were developed?

The children have:

  • developed their resilience through exposure to failures or setbacks.

 

  • demonstrated self-confidence and shown trust and support for others

 

  • developed their life skills through achieving goals, adapting positively to change and seeing setbacks as opportunities to learn

“It was wonderful to have the opportunity to spend time with the children outside of the classroom and away from their normal environment. I really enjoyed watching the children challenge themselves and show support to one another.  I also loved the fact that the children seemed so happy to be outdoors and with their friends, after a challenging couple of years with Covid preventing this.
