What’s New in Reading?

World Book Day 2024

On Thursday 7th March , we celebrated World Book Day, and seeing so many different book characters around the school was brilliant. During the day, the school was buzzing with many different reading activities. Including designing their favourite potato book characters, reading buddies with other classes, reading treasure hunts, author talks and snuggling up with book time.

Saviour Pirotta – Author Visit

On Monday4th March 2024, we were visited by a best-selling author, Saviour Pirotta.  He has written over 100 children’s books ranging from novelty titles for toddlers to short novels, collections of fairy tales and historical adventures. During his visit, Saviour had the Key Stage 2 children captivated with his stories from his childhood, including the tricks her played on a teacher who accused him of copying a story!  He talked about the inspirations for his plots, especially his novels based on myths and legends like the Egyptian scarab beetle, and about some of the people who have inspired his characters.

Northern Dreaming Storytime

Leeds Year of Culture 2023 has teamed up with the British Library to create Northern Dreaming – a collection of poetry and stories by 18 emerging and published writers. Each author shares their unique perspective and imagination, inspiring the next generation of dreamers. Today, at Clapgate, we were lucky enough to be visited by one of these Authors.

Our storyteller brought five short stories and poems to life in a magical performance using a simple set, props and costume. Children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, were a captivated audience and left for the session excited to use some of the stories and poems within their writing lessons.

“This morning the children had a special visit from the story company Northern Dreaming. The children loved listening to the lady tell her magical stories and they showed that they understood them even without having pictures to help them. The children were all involved when acting out various parts in different stories and they all used their brilliant imaginations to dream with her!” Reception Teachers

Book Recommendations

This term, our Senior Leadership Team and Librarians have recommended their favourite childhood books to children throughout school. These are now displayed in our school library for children to borrow and fall in love with themselves.
