What’s New in Geography

Using enquiry in geography

In KS1, staff have been looking at using enquiry questions. It is an area that the children can access freely during provision time. There is a sensory area, key words, questions, pictures, information texts, stories, a globe, an iPad and a “wonder box”. Children are encouraged to explore the area and using post it notes to write down any questions that they have. At the end of each week, the class teacher takes out the questions and spends time with the children discussing what they have learnt and where to go next.

Geography After School Club

Over the last couple of half terms, Mrs Lawton has started a geography club for year 1 – 3. The children have access to different quizzes about weather, learn about different countries and research animals with different habitats.

When speaking to some of the children they said:

  • “I love geography club because we get to learn about places that we have never been before!”
  • “I can’t believe that certain animals can’t live in certain places!”

Clapgate’s Litter Buddies

The Litter Buddies are a dedicated team of KS2 children who give up their break times to collect litter and ensure that the school environment is kept nice and clean. We are very grateful to these children for keeping our school safe and healthy.

In January, we had Litter Awareness Week. This was an opportunity for the children to learn about the impact litter is having on our school environment. We managed to collect over 800 pieces of litter! Since then, there has been a great improvement across all of school.

2022-2023

The Eco-Committee this year have focused on reducing the school’s energy usage and waste through many initiatives. Made up of five year 6 children, they have dedicated their break times to checking that classes are making sure their lights and boards are switched off when not in use. The Eco-Committee take lead of ‘Greenest Classroom of the Week’ and award the winners in our weekly celebration assembly.

2021-2022

Over the year, we will be working towards achieving a Green Flag award for creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly and energy-saving school. We have already implemented some great changes across school including our ‘Greenest Classroom of the Week’ award. Through meeting weekly, we aim to work towards set targets to improve our water and energy wastage across school.

In February, we visited Yorkshire Water Treatment Centre, in Headingley. We had a tour of the facilities and learned about the filtering process. We will be using the knowledge we have gained to deliver an assembly to educate other children on the issues surrounding water wastage.
