Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools so that they can support their ‘disadvantaged’ pupils and close the attainment gap between them and their peers.

Pupil Premium Funding

Which pupils are eligible for pupil premium funding?

Primary schools receive £1480 each year for every pupil who claims free school meals, or who has claimed free school meals in the last 6 years.  Schools also receive £2570 for pupils who have left local authority care through adoption, a special guardianship order or child arrangements order. In 2024-2025, at Clapgate, we received an additional £224,100 through the pupil premium grant.

How is the additional funding spent?

It is up to individual schools to decide how to spend the pupil premium.  Evidence suggests that pupil premium spending is most effective when schools used a tiered approach, targeting spending across the following three areas:

  • Improving the quality of teaching and learning for all (arranging training and professional development for all staff to improve the impact of teaching and learning for all pupils)
  • Targeted academic support (providing intervention when children are not reaching their full potential with quality first teaching)
  • Wider approaches (providing other types of support to help children reach their potential)
