French

Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things.

- Flora Lewis

At Clapgate, we understand the importance of instilling a love of languages. Languages open many doors in life and help develop an understanding of different cultures.

Children at Clapgate receive high-quality French teaching in Key Stage 2. French lessons begin when children start Year 3. The lessons are always creative, challenging and enjoyable! The staff will always be encouraging and supportive while the children learn a new language. We use a scheme called Language Angels to support teaching which is full of topics which are both interesting and relatable for the children. Each lesson is full of rich vocabulary and many opportunities for children to develop the four key skills of learning a language: speaking, listening, reading and writing.

Learning another language can have huge benefits to children’s memory, their problem-solving skills and their understanding of the world, as well as being fun! A good knowledge of French will provide children with a solid base to support them in learning other languages if children go on to study different languages in high school.

Overview of Subject Approach

Please see the document below which clearly outlines our approach to teaching French at Clapgate.

Learner Profile of French

Here you will find our subject learner profile for French.

Word of the Week

Each week, all children are introduced to a new French word which will be used as often as possible over the week. Staff will encourage children to use the word/phrase with the correct pronunciation so children are exposed to the language outside of French lessons. Younger children will then start KS2 (when French begins to be taught) with some basic knowledge of French.
