Computing

For some children, early exposure to coding will open doors they never knew existed.

- August Deshais

At Clapgate Primary School, we are fortunate enough to have a wide range of technology for the children to use. We have laptops, computers, and iPads. Pupils at Clapgate will experience high-quality computing lessons that will provide them with the skills they need to progress through life. We ensure that technology is not just limited to computing lessons and that it is used cross-curricularly, such as digital maps, creating music, and film-making. It is evident that technology is becoming a large part of our daily lives.

At Clapgate, we understand that delivering engaging and exciting lessons will inspire the children to become technologically minded. The teachers are well-trained in delivering computing lessons and are given a wide range of resources to meet the needs of all children. Regardless of the children’s academic ability, all children will feel included during our computing lessons and will be given ample opportunity to share their knowledge throughout the year.

Pupils at Clapgate know that their computing lessons are about problem-solving, teamwork, and fixing bugs. They understand that a lesson may require many steps to achieve a final outcome and that it is important that all steps are carried out accurately to meet the objective.

We currently use a scheme of work called NCCE Teach Computing. This gives the children access at home and at school. The children love using this website and are becoming increasingly confident with their computing skills.

Overview of Subject Approach

Please see the document below, which clearly outlines our approach to teaching computing at Clapgate.

Medium Term Plans

Please see below where you will find a sample of our medium-term plans for computing. Alongside our Teach Computing units, we also use Project Evolve to inform our teaching on Online Safety. Each medium-term plan includes one online safety lesson using objectives from Project Evolve. All children at Clapgate are taught how to stay safe online.

Skills Progression

Below you will find our skills progression and our vocabulary progression for computing.

Online Safety

At Clapgate we make sure children are made aware of staying safe online every day. We constantly remind children how to keep themselves safe through restorative conversations. We also follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme that ensures children are exposed to ways in which we can keep ourselves safe. As well as this, we use Project Evolve where children are explicitly taught different areas in which online safety is relevant. The children have these lessons throughout the half term to ensure they understand the importance of keeping safe.

Information for Parents

At Clapgate, we understand how important it is to keep our children safe online. Throughout the year, children are taught how to stay safe through their computing and PSHE lessons. In this section, there will be weekly updates on how to keep safe online and what different techniques as a parent or carer, you can do to make sure your child is making the right choice.

Take a look at Parental Controls Guide to see how you can control apps and features on your devices at home.
