Year 2 - Multiplication and Division

Project Overview

Year 2 have worked hard in maths to gain a deep understanding of multiplication and division.

They have used counters to make groups and have learned how the representation of the groups can be expressed in different ways.  Drawing groups and writing equations has helped them to explore their understanding, and creating arrays has helped them to relate the equations to each other.   When learning specifically about the two times table, they have discussed what the numbers in the equations represent, supported further by the use of number lines.  Stem sentences have helped them to express their understanding too.

What skills were developed?

Year 4 - Multiplication and Division

Project Overview

The children previously knew their 3, 4 and 8 times table as they had learnt these in year 3. The children also knew their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and they had learnt these in year 2. Therefore we started the topic by going over these times tables and looking at patters to how we could use them to help us with trickier calculations. Such as using 5 x 6 and 1 x 6 to work out 6 x 6. The children used lots of counters, arrays and diagrams to help with their learning. Once the children became confident with this we then moved on to division and looked at the relationship between multiplication and division. The children soon learnt abut inverse and how using our multiplication can help us with our division. We then used counters and base ten to work out our division. We grouped and shared depending on what the question was asking us to do. Eventually, we moved on to looking at dividing with remainders. From this we are then going to move onto long multiplication and division next half term. 

Year 4 - Multiplication and Division

"It is really important to know your times tables. They help with lots of things!" "I now understand how to make a fact family using my multiplication and division facts" "My favourite activity is when we use the counting stick as it makes me remember the order of the numbers in a times table."

What skills were developed?

  • Children learnt how to use times tables they already knew to help with their trickier times tables.
  • Children learnt the word "commutativity" and that 6 x 7 is the same as 7 x 6.
  • Children learnt further vocabulary such as dividend, quotient and divisor.
  • Children learnt about inverse and how this can help with our multiplication and division.
  • Children learnt the different between grouping and sharing and how this can effect our answers.

I was so impressed with how the children worked together to problem solve and use mathematical terminology to discuss. 1LS - Maths - Counting to 10

Project Overview

Counting to 10

During our first couple of weeks in year 1 we have been revisiting numbers to 10. We have practised counting forwards and backwards within 10 and have started and stopped at given numbers. We have been following the Maths No Problem guidance. We have been comparing groups of objects within 10, saying which has more or less. We have been representing numbers in different ways using practical equipment, the numeral and the word. We enjoy working with our partner to talk about our ideas.

  • Counted forwards and backwards within 10
  • They have read and written numbers 1-10 in both numerals and words
  • They have identified one more and one less than a given number
  • Used the language of "more than" and "less than" to compare groups of objects

The children have really impressed me with their mathematical knowledge. They have demonstrated an excellent understanding of numbers to 10 and are keen to learn.
