Year 6 – What do Christians believe about Jesus?

The children started the topic discussing what they knew about the Easter Story. They had to arrange the storyboard based on their previous knowledge. Once we had read the story together we discussed what we remembered and what was new information to us. We then looked at Holy Week and split each part: Palm sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday into different lessons. 

When looking at Palm sunday, we looked at the relevance of the palm trees, who was there at the time and how it is celebrated today in churches across the world. We spoke about this being the story of Holy Week. Then we moved onto Maundy Thursday and what the background of this day was. We looked at a painting (Last Supper), by Leonardo Da Vinci and analysed who we thought the different characters were and why we thought this. 

Following this, we then looked at the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus and its witnesses. We compared lots of different recounts of what happened, identifying differences and similarities. 

The children are now able to explain how the week is connected and how each event leads on to the next. They understand the meaning behind the names of each event and can explain how they are celebrated today.

What skills were developed?

  • Explored and summarised how Christians understand the significance of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

  • Expressed understanding and asked questions about how Jesus’ death is seen as a sacrifice, as a way of forgiveness.

  • Shown understanding of these terms and have weigh up what they mean for Christians today.

What the Teacher says

The children have enjoyed learning about an aspect of a religion that they might not necessarily follow. They have been kind and considerate regarding other people's beliefs and have provided some mature responses in discussions. Year 6 have enjoyed learning about Holy Week and are now aware of its relevance to why some people celebrate Easter. The children have thought carefully about people of this time may have felt and looked at different recounts, analysing them carefully.
