Art Year 2

Exploring line, shape and colour

Project Overview

Year 2 have been learning about line, shape and colour this half term. The children have explored making different marks, shapes and using a variety of colours. Year 2 used their sketchbooks to explore their use of line. They thought about all the different ways you can draw a line – horizontally, vertically, diagonally, wavy, zig-zag, hatching etc. They experimented with the thickness of their lines too. Next, they practised using water colour paints to make new colours. They created a background wash and thought about an interesting composition. They learnt about making their composition balanced. Year 2 used the work of Wassily Kandinsky as inspiration for their work and enjoyed listening and drawing to music. The end results are beautiful! Well done!

What The Student Says

“I loved making different lines using different drawing tools. ”

“Wassily Kandinsky heard music when he painted. We listened to music when we painted. It was very relaxing!”

“I am really pleased with my finished composition. I’ve used colour, line and shape.”

” I loved using water colour paints. I could make them strong and weak.”

Year 2 children

What skills were developed?

The children have:

  • explored their use of line, colour and shape
  • learnt how to make a balanced composition
  • learnt how to vary their use of line and colour
  • been able to look at and comment on the work of an artist
  • can recognise abstract art and discuss its features
  • used their sketchbooks to explore different art materials

What The Teacher Says

The children in year 2 have thoroughly enjoyed this unit of work. It was great to see them using their sketchbooks so confidently to explore line, shape and colour. The opportunity to listen to music while drawing and painting helped the children to concentrate and be creative in their approach to their work. It was fantastic to hear the children talking about ‘balanced composition’. They really enjoyed listening to the story of ‘The Noisy paintbox’ which helped them to understand about the early life of abstract, artist Wassily Kandinsky. Well done year 2. You created some beautiful, final compositions!
